Rational
Brief
Doing this brief in the past has come to prove that concept driven design is not always appreciated from the judges at secret 7. Aesthetics are their goal so bearing that in mind was key to this brief. Still, ideas have to come from somewhere so using the albums title "currents".
looking at other designs that visualised movement and currents.
working with lines seemed to be an effective method of visualising currents.
I tried to use this as influence to some typography whilst still keeping currents as a theme. This looked tacky though so I decided to move in a different direction.
Looking at the earth's currents helped spark some ideas of how the design could represent more than just one current.
I looked at how their current album represented movement and currents and tried to minimalist this effect as writing from my dissertation has come to show that albums are mainly seen as 150 pixel squares rather than 7 inch albums. However at secret 7 these albums will be printed so this decision was more of a subtle stamens rather than an application to improve functionality.
From this I got rid of the ball and thwarted experimenting with the lines left over.
I ended up at this that I think represented the surface of water quite well.
I then centre aligned the design and asked a few class mates what they thought. I then decided to leave the design and follow the same process again but with thicker lines and more colours.
the second outcome was completely different but still kept quite true to the initial idea of currents as it looked like water does when going down a sink.
Evaluation
This brief was a chance to see and experiment with short turn arounds for design. Giving myself a day to execute this brief helped push ideas out and also not think too much into the process. This helped highlight the point that as designers we do over think every aspect of design and how it will work. If the judges at secret seven don't care too much for thought behind the design do most audiences?
